NATIONAL COALITION FOR ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT HOLDS THIRD ANNUAL CONVENTION

Washington DC - Today, the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD) convenes its third Annual Convention at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington DC. Over 250 people from across the country from community based organizations serving the community and economic development interests of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are in the nation’s capitol for two days of capacity building workshops, organizing, networking and agenda setting. This year’s Convention theme, “The Time is Right! The Time is Now! Build National Capacity!” reflects a spirit of resolve for addressing the urgent needs of AAPI, immigrant, refugee, minority and low-income communities. “There are historic opportunities for strong partnerships between AAPI and community development advocacy groups, foundations, federal agencies and elected officials,” said National CAPACD Executive Director, Lisa Hasegawa.

Convention highlights include an Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Reception on Monday evening, with a book signing by Bob Santos of his book “Hum Bows Not Hot Dogs – Memoirs of a Savvy Asian American Activist,” and a Congressional Reception on Capitol Hill on Tuesday evening. Convention participants will be organizing a rally in front of the Capitol building at 4:30 PM Tuesday afternoon. The Convention will feature addresses by Stacey Davis, President and CEO of the Fannie Mae Foundation - the country's largest foundation devoted to affordable housing and community development, elected officials Congressmen David Wu, Michael Honda and Robert Underwood and other members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. Also speaking at the convention will be representatives of federal agencies including Paul Igasaki, Vice Chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and Michael Minoru Fawn Liu, Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developments (HUD). Representatives from Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the U.S. Census Bureau, and Federal Housing Finance Board (FHFB) will also be participating. Workshops will include presentations and briefings from prominent AAPI community leaders, researchers and community development experts.

“This convention is a catalyst for bringing forward the voices of local and grassroots communities - the voices and faces of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are no longer silent and invisible in this nation’s capitol. National CAPACD has grown tremendously in a few short years and has significantly strengthened the capacity of community based organizations to create neighborhoods of hope and opportunity,” stated Gordon Chin, National CAPACD Board President.

National CAPACD is the first national advocacy organization dedicated to housing and community development issues of AAPIs. Their mission is to enhance the capacity and ability of community-based organizations to conduct community development activities for AAPIs. Members are mostly non-for-profit community development organizations that provide housing, community and economic development programs, and other social services.
